چکیده

We present results from a survey of molecular hydrogen emission from a sample of Starburst and Seyfert galaxies carried out with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Pure rotational H2 emission has been detected in a number of extragalactic objects and a variety of environments. A number of transitions from S(7) to S(0) are detected in both Starbursts and Seyferts. Using excitation diagrams we derive temperatures and masses of the “warm” molecular hydrogen. We find that the temperature of the “warm” gas is similar in Starbursts and Seyferts (those Seyferts for which we have firm detections of the S(0) line) with a value of around T∼150 K. This “warm” gas accounts for as much as 10% of the total galactic mass (as probed by CO molecular observations) in Starbursts. The fraction of “warm” gas is overall higher in Seyferts, ranging between 2–35%. We then investigate the origin of the warm H2 emission. Comparison with published theoretical models and Galactic templates implies that although emission from photodissociation regions (PDR) alone could explain the emission from Starbursts and Seyferts, most likely a combination of PDR, shock emission and gas heated by X-rays (mostly for the Seyferts) is responsible for H2 excitation in extragalactic environments. Finally, we find that although PAH and H2 line emission correlate well in Starbursts and the large scale emission in AGN, H2 emission is much stronger compared to PAH emission in cases where a “pure” AGN dominates the energy output.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Spitzer spectra of Seyfert galaxies

The Spitzer IRS high resolution spectra of about 90 Seyfert galaxies from the 12μm Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. These represent about 70% of the total complete sample of local Seyfert galaxies. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25μm PAH feature equivalent width and the H2 emission line intensity) ...

Far-infrared Census of Starburst-seyfert Connection

Far-infrared flux densities are newly extracted from the IRAS database for the RSA and CfA complete samples of Seyfert galaxies. These data are used to classify the Seyfert galaxies into those where the far-infrared continuum emission is dominated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), circumnuclear starburst, or host galaxy. While AGN-dominant objects consist of comparable numbers of Seyfert 1 ...

Mid - infrared and optical spectroscopy of ultraluminous infrared galaxies : A comparison

New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications – starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) – with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The a...

Mid-Infrared line diagnostics of active galaxies A spectroscopic AGN survey with ISO-SWS

We present medium resolution (R ∼ 1500) ISO-SWS 2.4–45 μm spectra of a sample of 29 galaxies with active nuclei. This data set is rich in fine structure emission lines tracing the narrow line regions and (circum-)nuclear star formation regions, and it provides a coherent spectroscopic reference for future extragalactic studies in the mid-infrared. We use the data set to briefly discuss the phys...
